Victims ID'd in fiery Sugar Hill crash

SUGAR HILL -- Gwinnett police have tentatively identified two people involved in a fiery crash early on Tuesday.

Police spokesman Cpl. Edwin Ritter said the two victims were traveling north at the 5300 block of Sycamore Road when the driver of a dark gray BMW 740i lost control, crossed the road and struck a tree at approximately 12:30 a.m. The car was fully engulfed in flames, and both driver and passenger were deceased by the time the fire was extinguished.

Ritter said on Wednesday that the Gwinnett police Accident Investigation Unit has tentatively identified the driver as James P. Gifford, 30, of Ellijay, and the passenger as Thomas Hawkins, 21, of Snellville.

Investigators are waiting on confirmation through dental records.

The duo was believed to be en route to Lake Lanier following an alcoholic anonymous class, Ritter said.

Because of injuries and burns, investigators couldn't identify the victims immediately after the crash.

I find it very strange on the part of the Gwinnett Daily post to mention where the victims had been before the accident, and where they were going. I guess the reporter wanted to elude to the fact that the driver was drinking because he supposedly came from an "alcoholics anonymous class". Also, please get your facts straight. There are no such thing as an aa class. Their might be an alcohol awareness class, or court-appointed alcohol class, but not an alcoholics anonymous class. In AA, there are meetings.

I like how you read about people literally dying and burning to death, and you think about the fact that they mentioned them coming from an AA meeting. Try just respecting the situation and having a heart for the people that lost their lives instead of giving everyone a lesson on what AA meetings and Alcohol Awareness classes are.

Kscully - James was a good friend of mine. He was a wonderful person. Why don't you spend your time learning the difference between their and there rather than criticizing a GDP reporter who is just reporting the facts.
