LAWRENCEVILLE -- The identities of the shooter and victim in a Friday afternoon killing have been released.
Gwinnett County police believe the incident that left one dead at 1295 Mill Shyre Way in Lawrenceville was the product of self-defense. No charges have been filed against the shooter and resident, now identified as 41-year-old Larry Castell.
Police responded to the home at about 2:30 p.m. after a neighbor called 911. They found Santos Ortiz-Marrero, 27, lying in the garage's threshold, a bullet wound in his forehead and a piece of wood by his side.
Investigators believe Ortiz-Marrero approached Castell with the piece of wood, prompting Castell to shoot him. The gun was recovered in Castell's garage, according to a police report.
The shooter and victim knew each other. A witness was also at the home.
Gwinnett County police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith said all three men had "a bit of a back story," but that it wasn't relevant to the case. The exact events that preceded the shooting were still unknown Monday.
