Lilburn team takes LEGO title

LILBURN -- A small group of students from Lilburn Elementary put their building and engineering skills to the test over the weekend, besting competitors at the LEGO League Robotics tournament Saturday in Atlanta.

Team Coach Simone Dreifuss said the school is "extremely proud" of the team, The Leg-o-matics.

"The research trophy they won represents a great deal of work and we all learned a lot," Dreifuss said. "We are extremely proud of the team's hard work, dedication and progress. Without this, we would not enjoy the successes that have been ours this season."

Added Dreifuss: "our success is only possible because of the support of our administration."

In addition to Saturday's victory at the Atlanta tournament, the team won first place at the Super Regionals at Creekland Middle School.

Team members include Jacky Nguyen, Jared Lussiana, Naya Wu, Gabriella Neris, Josiah Das, Cindy Bui, Layla Seifden, Isabella Hernandez, Barbara Walker, Valeria Hernandez.

Coaches include Dreifuss, Beverly Allen and Jane Evans. Team mentors include Jack Allen, Matt Nietzche and Mark Pallansch.

According to its website, the Georgia FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science Technology) LEGO League was founded to "inspire interest in science and engineering among young people."
