Suspect reaches plea bargain in Norcross murder case

LAWRENCEVILLE -- A murder suspect entered a guilty plea Friday and charges were reduced to voluntary manslaughter in connection with a stabbing death at a Norcross apartment complex last May.

Gwinnett County Assistant District Attorney Jon Setzer said Friday that 21-year-old Juan Agustin Rangel-Oviedo had entered a guilty plea in the case, receiving "a sentence of 40 years with the first 30 years to be served in prison." He also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault charges.

In exchange for the plea, the case against his brother -- Rogelio Rangel-Oviedo, 18, whom police had initially arrested on charges of hindering the apprehension of a fugitive -- was dismissed, Setzer said.

Gwinnett County police found the victim, 20-year-old Sifredo Palma, stabbed multiple times at the Sinclair Apartments off South Norcross Tucker Road on May 1, 2011. He later died of his injuries.

Both Rangel-Oviedo brothers were arrested after being questioned by investigators.
