Golden House

1600 Pleasant Hill Road, Duluth

Open since: September 2011

Manager: Mark Sze

Location: Golden House is located next to the Joe's Crab Shack at the corner of Pleasant Hill and Sweetwater roads.

Hours: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 11 a.m. to midnight Fridays, 10 a.m. to midnight Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sundays

Atmosphere: Think traditional, classic Chinese decor. Before you step foot in the door, you will see the colorful water fountains outside in the parking lot.

Inside at the host stand, Golden House has a large fish tank welcoming guests are they come through the door. Enter the grand dining room to find a sea of tables set for dinner (napkin, plate, cup and chopsticks) with bright red seat covers with golden bows. These two colors represent good fortune and luck in the Chinese culture.

Some of the tables are larger than others to accommodate families and parties. The biggest ones have massive lazy susans in the middle for people to share the meals which can be served family style. Dim sum is very popular on Sunday mornings, which can also be shared around the table.

There are chandeliers, Chinese paper lamps and artworks throughout the massive room and a display case filled with traditional Chinese vases of all colors sits on the wall facing the north, plus there are wooden accents throughout the building to add a touch of ancient Chinese decor.

When you're ready to order, the servers, dressed in black and white uniforms, can take your order and answer any questions.

Menu: The recipes are Cantonese from the south of China. When people in the West talk of "Chinese" food, they are usually talking about Cantonese cuisine.

The menu is in both English and Cantonese Chinese. It is comprised of many traditional dishes, like Peking duck, congee (porridge) and spare ribs with black bean sauce, but there are plenty of other meals for the less adventurous, like Mongolian beef, sesame chicken and shrimp lo mein.

Dim sum, typically Asian appetizers, is served daily and servers walk throughout the eatery pushing carts with a variety of the small snacks. If you want a container of food, you must stop the server, pick a dish and give them your "punch card" to mark off what you ordered. That is how dim sum restaurants keep track of what you've eaten.

Golden House works on new house specials all the time, but they only create dishes with produce that is in season. If people love a dish with halibut, but it's not always available at a reasonable price. The chef will add it back to the specials when halibut season is back.

Take out is available for those who would rather dine at home.

Things you might not know: Dim sum fills the restaurant fast on Sundays, so plan to come early or come during the week.
