A center-quarterback combo good enough to help bring Grayson its first state football title took another step together this week when the pair of Rams committed to Colorado State.

Plus, they'll get to keep the same helmets playing for another team named Rams.

Grayson center Fred Zerblis and quarterback Nick Schuessler committed separately this week to coaches from the Rams program in Fort Collins, Colo., headed by new coach Jim McElwain.

The pair, with offers in hand, made a trip together last weekend to visit the school.

"We were kind of trying to go to the same place and we just end up getting an offer from the same place," Zerblis said.

"With Coach McElwain coming from Alabama, I like him. I like Colorado and being out in Colorado. It felt like a business. It felt like a job that needs to be done."

McElwain came to Colorado State from Alabama, another team recruiting Zerblis and according to Zerblis it was Alabama's defensive coordinator Kirby Smart who encouraged McElwain's pursuit.

"Kirby was really the one," Zerblis said.

Interest in Zerblis led to interest in Schuessler for the former Tide offensive coordinator.

Schuessler threw for 1,614 in 15 unbeaten games for Grayson this past season, despite the Rams run-oriented offense. His biggest moment came in the state semifinals when he engineered a 87-yard game-winning drive, ending it with a go-ahead touchdown pass to Marcus Lindquist with 28 seconds left. It was one of 19 touchdowns Schuessler threw on the season. He threw just three interceptions.

Zerblis was the center on an offensive line that blocked for a running game that gained 3,451 yards on the ground, second best in Gwinnett County and tops among Class AAAAA schools. He said he was told he comes to Colorado State as a backup center.

"I am trying to get on the field as quickly as possible," Zerblis said. "I figure I can play either center or guard."
