Projects aplenty for Auburn's Arts Center in 2012

AUBURN -- Artisans rejoice! The Georgia Piedmont Arts Center has a content-packed 2012 on tap.

Relocated from Winder, the not-for-profit center occupies a historic house in downtown Auburn. Its mission is to "cultivate, facilitate and promote a community in which all art forms can thrive cooperatively," according to the center's website.

Already on the calendar are three gallery exhibitions -- (Jan. 21 and 22, Feb. 18 and 19, and March 17 and 18) -- and two outdoor tent festivals, which will showcase fine art and fine crafts, said Kathleen Gill, GPAC president.

New for 2012 will be Clay Hand-Building classes and the Creative Canvas Group, a one-evening "adventure into acrylic painting."

"Those who attend will return home with a completed painting on canvas -- no prior experience needed," Gill said. The cost is $25.

The center is actively searching for additional teachers. Member meetings are held at the cottage the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m.

"The folks at GPAC invite all artists and art-lovers to come on out and join the group," Gill said.

The center is also seeking entries for the annual spring tent festival, "Spring Phling." It'll be held April 10 this year on the center's lawn.

As they have for more than a decade, center leaders will continue to offer classes in drawing, painting, pottery on the wheel and sculpture, as well as specialized short workshops, Gill said.
