Caywood Maroney Briscoe, age 66, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at her home surrounded by her loving family after a gallant fight with cancer. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, James H. (Jimmy) Briscoe, Jr.; son & daughter-in-law, James H. “Jack” Briscoe, III and his wife Dr. Nicole Sullens; daughter & son-in-law, Michelle Briscoe McMillan and her husband David McMillan; three grandchildren, Tessa McMillan, Caitlin McMillan and Hayden McMillan; mother, Christine Williams Drake; brother, Stanley Drake; two sisters, Fran Caldwell-Smith and Linda DeSoto; mother-in-law, Susie Briscoe; brothers-in-law & sisters-in-law, Joe & Shelia Briscoe, Terry & Elaine Ford, Roy Briscoe, Marilyn Briscoe; and Sue Drake; aunt, Ruby Patterson Williams; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and loyal friends. Mrs. Briscoe was preceded in death by two sons, Paul and Benjamin Briscoe, brother, Steven Drake, father, Clarence Drake; and father-in-law, James H. Briscoe, Sr. Mrs. Briscoe was born in Joplin, Missouri on September 11, 1945 to Christine Williams Drake and Clarence H. Drake. She was a graduate of Joplin High School in 1963 and received her Masters Degree in Education from the University of Georgia. She will be known as a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, mentor, and committed school teacher. Mrs. Briscoe first started her education career as a Secretary at Snellville Middle School. She retired last June after 23 years of service with the Gwinnett County School System. Her love for World History at Collins Hill High School was her legacy. She loved to read and passed on this love for historical events to her family and students. Mrs. Briscoe had students that participated in the State of Georgia competition for the Holocaust Memorial Museum yearly trip to Washington, DC. She had two students that finished first in the state competition for two years straight, winning a trip for the student and teacher to visit the Holocaust Memorial Museum. Mrs. Briscoe served as the Collins Hill Chairman of the Gwinnett County Relay for Life in 2009-2010 and participated this past year with her husband Jimmy pushing in her in her wheelchair. She was a long time member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church and participated in various church activities. Caywood Briscoe battled cancer with dignity, grace and unwavering commitment to stopping the disease that takes so many lives too early. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, students and all the people that experienced her wonderful zest for life. The Service Celebrating the Life of Caywood Briscoe will be held Saturday, January 21, 2012, at 2:00 P.M. at Tom M. Wages Lawrenceville Chapel with Dr. Jeff Gongwer officiating. Interment Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial gifts be made to Gwinnett County Relay for Life, 6500 Sugarloaf Pkwy., Ste. 260, Duluth, GA 30097 in memory of Caywood M. Briscoe.
