Gwinnett County's two past swimming Olympians got the 2012 Olympic year off to a strong start at last weekend's Austin Grand Prix.
Weir, a Brookwood grad who trains locally at SwimAtlanta, swept the sprint freestyle events. The 2004 Olympian won the 100-meter free in 54.14 seconds, finishing ahead of 2011 USA Swimming female athlete of the year Missy Franklin (second in 54.46), and won the 50 free the next day with a time of 25.23.
Shanteau, a Parkview product who now trains in Los Angeles, won the 200 breaststroke in 2:10.72, nearly two seconds ahead of runner-up Valerii Dymo of Ukraine. The 2008 Olympian also was third in the 100 breast (1:01.54).
