LAWRENCEVILLE -- Commuters passing through Lawrenceville Monday morning may have noticed something unusual.

Police responded at 9:37 a.m. Monday to E. Pike and McArthur streets, where a CSX railroad freight car rolled its way into traffic across from the old cemetery. The train was stopped at the time the car rolled off the track.

Lt. Philip Byers with the Lawrencville Police Department said that one of the railroad cars may have come unhinged, causing it to move, but that he wasn't certain. Byers stood beside the railroad car, which partially blocked the roadway, waving traffic around it.

There were no injuries reported as a result of the incident.

"It's unknown as to why it ended up in the roadway," said Byers, adding that "CSX was quick to respond."

Workers with rail-based transportation corporation CSX worked the scene, trying to determine the cause of the incident. They declined to comment Monday morning.

According to its website, CSX provides railroad transportation services including traditional rail service and the transport of intermodal containers and trailers.

A CSX Railroad office is located at 242 Culver St., in downtown Lawrenceville.

It was unclear Monday what was inside the freight car.
