North, Wesleyan to host basketball showcases Saturday

A drive up and down Buford Highway this weekend will get basketball fans to two top high school basketball showcases.

The fifth annual Peach State Hoops Battle of the Southeast is Saturday at Wesleyan, featuring six quality girls games. The event is run by Brandon Clay, who operates Peach State Hoops basketball event company.

The boys event up the road at North Gwinnett, the On the Radar Hoops Invitational, will have six matchups in its first year. The showcase is sponsored by Shun Williams and his On the Radar Hoops scouting service.

"What I wanted to do was showcase a lot of the good basketball teams around the state," Williams said. "That's the biggest thing for me."

The girls showcase at Wesleyan begins at 10:30 a.m. with the Class AA sixth-ranked Greater Atlanta Christian girls taking on St. Pius (No. 3 in AAA). That's followed by a pair of non-Gwinnett matchups -- Columbia-Thomasville Prep and East Hall-Southwest Atlanta Christian.

The 3 p.m. matchup is defending AA state champion Buford (No. 3 in AA) vs. Alpharetta (No. 8 in AAAAA). Host Wesleyan (No. 1 in A) faces Oak Hill Academy (Va.) at 4:30 p.m. and the finale is Norcross (No. 2 in AAAAA) vs. Riverdale (Tenn.) at 6 p.m.

At North, the opening game is Marietta vs. South Cobb at 10 a.m., followed by Parkview-Alexander at noon and Hillgrove-Langston Hughes at 2 p.m. The South Gwinnett boys play Harrison at 4 p.m.

The 6 p.m. game features two ranked opponents in Buford (No. 3 in AA) and Whitefield Academy (No. 3 in A), which precedes the finale of host North vs. McEachern at 8 p.m.
