ATLANTA (AP) -- Authorities say they plan to increase security around the Georgia State Capitol after a state employee was carjacked in a nearby parking lot.
Reports say that 22 state troopers will walk a beat in and around the Gold Dome to free up Capitol police to increase patrols in the surrounding area.
Police said Public Service Commission employee Irma Correa was carjacked Dec. 29 in the State Archives Building parking lot, about 300 yards from the State Capitol.
Correa tells WSB-TV the crime occurred during the day, around 3 p.m. She says she was walking with a co-worker when a man flashed a gun and forced his way into her vehicle. One suspect, a 17-year-old, was apprehended.
Authorities say the heightened security will be phased in starting around Feb. 1.
