George Ogburn

George Michael “Butch” Ogburn, age 72, passed away on Jan. 7, 2012. Born in Atlanta on Jan. 19, 1939, Mike was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, & friend to many. He was infinitely proud of his 6 children, 12 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Bebe Deanne Ogburn-Cagle, & three grandchildren: Lauren Taylor Ogburn, Wesley Alexander Edge, & Jon-Michael DeWitt Ogburn. He is survived by his loving wife Carolyn; children Michele Weaver, Christa Edge, Robert Ogburn, Darien Ogburn, and Renee’ Queen, & their spouses; as well as his grandchildren & great-grandchildren. Upon discharge from the Navy he married Carolyn Elaine Jackson on Nov. 30, 1958. He was an eclectic entrepreneur spending the majority of his career in the automobile industry owning & managing many auto dealerships, repair shops, & gas stations in the Atlanta area. He was successful in auto racing as well. Mike also owned a variety of other businesses including a flea market and pawn shops. He was active in the Masonic Lodge & attained the title of Master Mason, 32nd degree. He enjoyed fishing, watching the Braves & Falcons, but most joy came from spending time with his family. He was a strong patriarch & worked hard to keep the family close. He took pride in coaching his children & grandchildren in baseball, football, & softball. He also enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s various events, including ballet recitals, baseball, softball, football, & hockey games. His presence at these events was a small marker for the love he had for his family. After many years of searching and through the realization of the Redeemer’s hand, he received the forgiveness of his Maker through baptism on Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010. He became a member of Heritage Baptist Church in Statham in Sept. 2010. He will be missed by his family & friends equal to the love he gave & received throughout his life. The family will receive visitors Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012 from Noon until 2:00 PM at Smith Memory Chapel (755 Atl. Hwy S.E., Winder 30680). A 2:00 PM service will be held to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers donations in his honor may be sent to Heritage Baptist Church Building Fund, 1867 Dooley Town Rd, Statham, GA 30666.
