Penn State has hired Lawrenceville native Ted Roof as its defensive coordinator, according to a report Monday night by ESPN, which said that Roof confirmed the hire via text message.
Roof, a standout linebacker at Central Gwinnett and Georgia Tech, had been the defensive coordinator at Auburn the previous three seasons. He won the BCS National Championship with the Tigers his second season.
He left Auburn prior to its Chick-fil-Bowl appearance last month and joined George O'Leary's Central Florida staff at defensive coordinator. His stay there was short-lived, however.
Roof will be reunited at Penn State with new head coach Bill O'Brien, who coached with him at Georgia Tech. O'Brien, who is finishing this season at the New England Patriots' offensive coordinator, was at Tech from 1995-2002.
