LILBURN -- Police were scouring the area around Lilburn's Lake Lucerne ON Monday afternoon, searching for a suspect involved in a hit-and-run accident with a police officer.
The original incident occurred at about 12:10 a.m. Sunday, when 25-year-old Javon Depass was reportedly driving his Nissan Maxima westbound on Stone Mountain Highway. According to police reports, Depass' vehicle veered to the right before he overcorrected and went left, crossing several lanes and slamming into a moving police car.
The police vehicle was "pushed over the center concrete median and into the eastbound lanes," the report said.
The officer complained of "minor" injuries to his neck, back and legs as Depass kept driving -- but not for long. The suspect reportedly swerved off the road near Lake Lucerne Drive and slammed into a utility pole. He then fled on foot, police said.
A K9 search in the wooded area near the lake was unsuccessful, but did turn up Depass' wallet, police said.
Because family members told authorities that Depass had not been seen since the accident and could not swim, investigators were combing Lake Lucerne Monday for his body or other clues, Gwinnett County police spokesman Cpl. Edwin Ritter said.
"We're searching to see if he in fact went in there and drowned," Ritter said. "We have no idea if that's the case or not, but the (K9's scent trail) ended there."
