ATLANTA (AP) -- Atlanta's zoo has two new tiny monkeys after a golden lion tamarin gave birth.
Zoo Atlanta says 5-year-old Robin gave birth to three infants Saturday. One did not survive, which is not uncommon for these monkeys. The other two seem to be doing well. Golden lion tamarins are tiny monkeys that are about the size of squirrels.
The zoo says Robin's mate, 5-year-old Theo, will take over care within a matter of weeks because males are the primary caregivers for the young. Robin and Theo have three previous offspring.
Golden lion tamarins are native to Brazil's Atlantic coastal rainforests. The wild golden lion tamarin population stood at just 250 in the mid-1980s. It now numbers more than 1,600 after a network of zoos successfully reintroduced captive-born tamarins to the wild.
