ROME -- Sydni Means fueled a big fourth-quarter comeback by Greater Atlanta Christian, but it fell just short as the sixth-ranked Spartans fell 62-60 to No. 1 Model in the second round of the Class AA basketball playoffs.
Model led 55-44 with less than four minutes left, but GAC (20-9) fought back behind Means, who had 12 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter, and Brianna Cummings, who had a game-high 23 points.
Means' putback of a missed free throw with 26 seconds left got GAC to within 59-55 and a basket by Cummings with 10 seconds remaining closed the margin to 60-57. The Spartans, out of timeouts, fouled Model's Carla Clemons, who made both free throws to seal the win. Means hit a long 3-pointer at the buzzer for the final margin.
Sierra Lawrence also scored 16 points for the Spartans.
Model (28-1) led 30-24 at halftime and 43-36 after three quarters before pushing its lead to double digits. Bekah Sapp led the hosts with 20 points, Timia Reynolds scored 13, Clemons had 11 points and Karlee Akin scored eight.
