Savannah port welcomes its largest cargo ship

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) -- The Port of Savannah has welcomed its largest ever visitor -- the mammoth cargo ship MSC Roma.

The Liberian-flagged cargo ship measures 1,100 feet long and 150 feet wide and is capable of carrying 9,200 cargo containers.

The Savannah Morning News reports that makes it the largest cargo ship ever to call on Savannah's booming port, the fourth busiest container port in the U.S.

The Roma arrived Friday and was scheduled to depart Saturday. Port officials say it had to come and go only partly loaded and near high tide because the Savannah River isn't deep enough at low tide.

Georgia ports chief Curtis Foltz says that underscores the need to deepen the Savannah harbor from 42 feet to 48 feet.
