DACULA -- While the rest of the county is counting down the days until spring blooms, the city of Dacula is working on its Memorial Day festivities in May.
"It's about 100 days until May 28, 2012, Memorial Day 2012. Though most will consider these to be single-day events, the planning has been ongoing since the beginning of the year and will cover several days," said Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks on Dacula's website. "My personal thanks for those who work so hard to honor the sacrifices of our veterans."
The city's mission is "to promote patriotism and encourage area citizens and businesses to participate in a celebration of our country's freedom on Memorial Day by honoring all veterans, living and deceased, who have served their country paying the price of freedom."
Dacula is doing that by celebrating on two days this year. On April 28, there will be a Miss Memorial Day Pageant at the Hamilton Mill Lakeview Clubhouse. Babies all the way to adults may enter the pageant, which is open to females only. To learn how to enter, visit www.missmemorialday.com.
On May 28, the city celebrates and honors veterans with a 1-mile fun run, 5K race, a Memorial Day Parade and festival. This year's parade theme is "Their Sacrifice, Our Gratitude" and will salute Korean War veterans.
