Senate OKs bill to help find, honor dead veterans

ATLANTA (AP) -- The Georgia Senate will re-vote on legislation aimed at identifying and properly honoring deceased veterans.

The bill passed unanimously in the Senate on Friday, but Sen. Renee Unterman, the bill's sponsor, asked to re-vote on the bill next week to include an amendment.

Unterman says the measure is needed because many veterans die and their bodies go unclaimed and unidentified by family members. The legislation allows nonprofits to contact funeral directors across the state to identify these soldiers and give them full military honors and burial in one of the state's cemeteries for veterans.

The bill should return to the Senate agenda on Monday.
