Ten Bistro

Ten Bistro

-- Owner: Jesse Kauffman

-- Location: Ten Bistro is located off of Peachtree Parkway in a strip mall tucked in between Johnny's Pizza and Healing Touch Massage of Norcross.

-- Hours: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 11 to 1 a.m. Fridays, 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays

-- Atmosphere: The outside of the restaurant doesn't look like much, but when you enter the front doors, your eyes are flooded with color, texture and warmth. Across the restaurant hangs a wooden panel with painted words by the Beatles, which say, "Life is very short, and there's no time for fussing and fighting, my friend."

And that's exactly what owner Jesse Kauffman believes. After working for corporate restaurants for more than a decade, he never thought he would work in the industry again until this space became available.

"I saw the place and I said, 'Oh my God. This is turn and key,'" he said. "I wanted to surround myself with beautiful things."

Now there is local art hanging on the walls and every piece is for sale. The owner keeps 25 percent of the sales to give to a different charity each month.

Kauffman kept most of the original stone and wood work, wooden floors, blown-glass lights and wrought iron accents. He added touches of his personality throughout the space to make it his own, such as his TV over the bar, fish tank behind the bar, and guitar, bongos and electric piano at -- you guessed it -- the end of the bar.

"When I moved into this restaurant with the anticipation of being here many hours of my life, I moved all of my things here," he said.

Kauffman's personality also shines by the music selection he plays in the restaurant -- all of it is from Kauffman's personal iPod.

Outside, there are extra tables and a fire pit.

-- Menu: The menu was created in two creative ways: recipes from Kauffman's imagination and recipes from residents who live close to the eatery.

"My concept for Ten Bistro was to visit the 10 neighborhoods of Peachtree Corners -- I live in one," he said. "I asked, 'Who likes food? Who's a chef wannabe? Send me your recipe.' We selected a few to go on the menu. One day we'll have 10 on the menu. It's about bringing the 10 neighborhoods together."

And the food is made from the freshest produce. Kauffman buys organic when at all possible, but sometimes price weighs out buying organic.

"I try for all of my produce to be organic," he said. "The whole thing about organic is that everyone would eat it 100 percent of the time if there wasn't a price issue."

The foods that are always organic are tomatoes, celery, peaches, strawberries, apples, blueberries, spinach, nectarines, cherries, kale, collards, lettuce and grapes, along with the milk and half and half.

Eggs are cage-free, organic and local when available. All mayonnaises and aiolis are made in-house with organic eggs. They also use organic flour in baking and cooking. All chicken is organic and they serve grass-fed, free-range, all-natural local beef.

For those who are watching what they're eating, Ten Bistro offers gluten-free and vegetarian selections. Plus, there is a kid's menu for the little ones.

-- Things you might not know: Kauffman grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and is fluent in Portuguese.
