PREP ROUNDUP: Hebron opens baseball season with 3-2 win over Buford

BUFORD -- Two defending state baseball champions collided on Tuesday night as Hebron, the Class A champ, held off Class AA titleholder Buford 3-2.

Hebron (1-0) was led by Mason Felt, who delivered five scoreless innings in recording the win. Felt allowed just one hit and struck out nine, while Jordan Hillyer pitched the final two innings in recording the save. Hillyer finished with four strikeouts and two runs allowed.

Lew Stephens got the offense going for Hebron with a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth. P.J. Westbury also went 1-for-2 with a triple and two runs for Hebron, while Hillyer finished 1-for-2.

BASEBALL

Mountain View 5, Lanier 2

SUGAR HILL -- Mountain View topped Lanier 5-2 on Tuesday night, giving the Bears a win in their season opener.

Joey Bell picked up the win, going five innings with three hits, two earned runs, two walks and six strikeouts. The save went to Kyle Mitchell, who struck out three in two innings.

Garry Gwaltney had a hit and two RBIs for the Bears, while Peyton Fore finished with two hits, two runs and an RBI. Beau Blair also had a solid game with three hits and two runs.

Northview 7, Peachtree Ridge 3

SUWANEE -- Northview spoiled the season opener for Peachtree Ridge by defeating the Lions 7-3 on Tuesday night.

Brian Hanberry was the lone bright spot for Peachtree Ridge on offense, going 2-for-3 with a double, home run and three RBIs. Tyler Haswell also had a double, while Donald Frew pitched two scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts.

Wesleyan 11, Pinecrest 1

NORCROSS -- Wesleyan opened 2012 with an 11-1 win over Pinecrest Academy on Tuesday night.

Jamie Stark earned the win for the Wolves with four innings work, allowing two hits with six strikeouts. Will Anderson followed with two innings of relief for the save, striking out four.

Joseph Sheffield led the offense, going 2-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBIs. Stark also had two hits, including a double, with two runs scored. Wesleyan improved to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in Region 5-A.

GAC 6, Tucker 5

NORCROSS -- Greater Atlanta Christian won its season opener on Tuesday night by outlasting Tucker 6-5.

Patrick Schultz led the offense for GAC, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs. Ross Wood also went 1-for-1 and scored three runs.

John Lamay picked up the win in relief with one inning of work.

BOYS SOCCER

Peachtree Ridge 3, Berkmar 2

SUWANEE -- Despite being down one man the entire second half because of a red card, Peachtree Ridge managed to hold on for a 3-2 win over Berkmar on Tuesday night.

Jeremy Rector scored two goals for the Lions (2-1), while Kevin Zuluga finished with a goal and an assist. Juan Herrera also had an assist for the Lions.

Duluth 3, North Cobb 2

DULUTH -- Luke Torak of Duluth scored two goals, including the go-ahead goal with 5:25 left to play on a penalty kick, to help give the Wildcats a 3-2 win over North Cobb.

Ivaylo Yorbanov scored the third goal for Duluth (1-1-1).

South 3, Tri Cities 1

SNELLVILLE -- South Gwinnett ran its record to 3-0 on Tuesday night with a 3-0 shutout of Tri Cities.

South Gwinnett's goals came from Sekou Thornell, Preston Taggart and Chris Keller.

Archer 7, Eastside 2

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Zach Wachholz scored three goals and Abraham Sesay added two more as Archer topped Eastside 7-2 on Tuesday night.

Trenton Whitely and Jaime Zambrano each scored one goal as Archer improved to 1-1-1.

Brookwood 6, North 1

SUWANEE -- Five different Brookwood players scored Tuesday night as the Broncos rolled to a 6-1 win over North Gwinnett.

Trevor Mooney had one goal with two assists, while Adrian Alabi, Luis Sanchez, Kelson Brunelle and Cameron Grassmyer each scored one. Brookwood's other goal come off of an own goal by North. Brookwood improved to 2-1, while North fell to 0-3.

Central 2, West Hall 0

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Central Gwinnett recorded its first win of 2012 by defeating West Hall 2-0 on Tuesday night.

Rigo Gudiel and Juan Gonzales each scored one goal for Central (1-0-1), while keeper Charlie Deloatche recorded the shutout along with an assist.

Grayson 0, Loganville 0

LOGANVILLE -- Grayson and Loganville battled each other to a 0-0 tie on Tuesday night.

Grayson (2-0-1) keeper Callen Rhodes had a solid game with 11 saves.

Norcross 3, Dacula 0

NORCROSS -- Juan Martinez scored two goals Tuesday night to lead Norcross 3-0 over Dacula.

Alonzo Vega provided the third goal for the Blue Devils (2-1).

GAC 3, Providence 2

LILBURN -- Two top-ranked boys soccer teams in Class AA and Class A clashed on Tuesday night with No. 2 Greater Atlanta Christian (AA) edging No. 1 Providence (A) 3-2.

GAC (1-1) built a 2-0 lead in the second half and held on for the win. GAC received its goals from Max Gomas, Vishal Patel and Grant Griffin, with assists coming from George Winfrey, Davis Bryan and Jimmy Stalkhe.

Josh Platillero of Providence (0-2) scored one goal and assisted another to Will Lowndes.

Hebron 2, Apalachee 1

WINDER -- Chris Austin scored two goals Tuesday night as part of Hebron's 2-1 win over Apalachee.

Austin scored his goals off assists from Cole Redman and Braden Elmer. Joey Redman and Noah Blalock shared time at keeper for Hebron (2-0).

Wesleyan 2, AIS 0

NORCROSS -- Wesleyan scored two goals in the second half to come away with a 2-0 win over Atlanta International School on Tuesday night.

Drew Sutton scored the first goal off an assist from Eric Sunderman. Sunderman would later provide the second goal off a feed from Jay Baker. Zander Yost had four saves in keeper, while the defensive play of Baker and Cole Warren helped keep AIS scoreless.

GIRLS SOCCER

Peachtree Ridge 3, Berkmar 1

SUWANEE -- Peachtree Ridge's Ashley Balmforth put in two goals Tuesday night in leading the Lions to a 3-1 win over Berkmar.

The third goal for the Lions (2-1) came from Shelby Jennings.

Grayson 2, Loganville 0

LOGANVILLE -- Grayson keeper Cadye Picklesimer saved five shots on Tuesday night in helping the Rams shut out Loganville 2-0.

Brittany Miller and Alexa Webb each scored a goal as Grayson improved to 2-1.

Duluth 1, North Cobb 0 OT

DULUTH -- It took an advantage on penalty kicks, but Duluth finally came out on top Tuesday night with a 1-0 win over North Cobb.

Duluth keeper Taylor Torrance recorded four saves in regulation and one big one during PKs in helping preserve the win. Duluth improved to 1-1-1.

North 4, Brookwood 3 OT

SUWANEE -- North Gwinnett's Lauren Harriman had two goals and an assist on Tuesday night in helping lift the Bulldogs to a 4-3 win over Brookwood in penalty kicks.

Harriman tied the match at 3-3 with 24 seconds left in the the second overtime and clinched the match by hitting the fifth and deciding PK. Taylor Burns added a goal and an assist for North (1-2), while Amanda Delgado finished with an assist.

Norcross 3, Dacula 2

NORCROSS -- Norcross picked up its first win of the season on Tuesday, getting a 3-2 win over Dacula.

Norcross (1-1) received one goal each from Nicki Willis, Jordan Lewter and Maddie Clark.

Dacula (1-1-1) picked up one goal each from Makayla Clack and Lauren Vick off assists from Ruva Chimedza and Valeria Bermeo.

Archer 3, Eastside 0

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Megan Wilson of Archer put in three goals Tuesday night in leading the Tigers to a 3-0 shutout over Eastside.

Goalkeeper Rachael Pfeiffer recorded the shutout as Archer improved to 2-1.

Providence 2, South 1

SNELLVILLE -- Providence ran its unbeaten record to 3-0 on Tuesday by edging South Gwinnett 2-1.

Brooke Kelly scored for Providence off an assist from Robyn Lowndes, while Kelly assisted the other goal scored by Anna Bougas.

Hebron 4, Apalachee 3

WINDER -- Hebron posted its first win of the girls soccer season on Tuesday by nipping Apalachee 4-3.

Alexa Allen scored two goals to lead Hebron (1-0-1), while Jordan Lowery and Emily Stryker helped with one goal each.

Wesleyan 4, AIS 2 OT

NORCROSS -- Wesleyan scored twice in overtime, getting goals from Diane Torres and Kenzie Heddinger, as the Wolves pulled away for a 4-2 win over Atlanta International School.

Torres finished with two goals and an assist, while Heddinger had the one goal. Christina Moraitis also added a goal for Wesleyan (1-0-1), while Savannah Newman and Darby Coxhead each had assists.

BOYS TENNIS

Parkview 4, Archer 1

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Parkview logged its first win of the season with a 4-1 win over Archer at Rhodes Jordan Park.

Sunny Tran won at No. 2 singles for Parkview, while Calvin Gratz won in the No. 3 slot. The doubles matches were both won by Parkview with wins by Hunter Stroud and Chris Whitlock at No. 1 and Nick Button and Alex Sullivan at No. 2. doubles.

Mill Creek 3, Chattahoochee 2

HOSHCTON -- Quentin Lavender won at No. 2 singles and Tyler Abbot at No. 3 on Tuesday night as Mill Creek edged Chattahoochee 3-2.

Mill Creek (4-1) clinched the match with a win at No. 1 doubles by Brad Adkins and Travis Hanes.

North 3, Northview 2

SUWANEE -- North Gwinnett picked up singles wins from Taylor Buchholz, Mark Hardy and R.J. Clement on Tuesday night as the Bulldogs slipped past Northview 3-2. The win put North's record at 1-0.

Mountain View 3, Central 2

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Imaad Hakim of Mountain View notched a win at No. 3 singles on Tuesday night in helping the Bears to a 3-2 win over Central Gwinnett.

Also winning for Mountain View (2-0) was D.J. Mattocks and Troy Major at No. 1 doubles and Taylor Dodd and Josh Gilbert at No. 2 doubles.

Collins Hill 5, Grayson 0

LOGANVILLE -- Collins Hill ran its record to 4-0 on Tuesday with a 5-0 shutout of Grayson.

Singles winners were Chris Clark, Tyler Kallgren and Ian Melnik, while the doubles matches went to the pair of Jake Inderrieden and Alec Rahmanian and the duo of Evan Padvorac and Josh Jackson.

Apalachee 3, Cedar Shoals 2

ATHENS -- Apalachee improved to 2-0 on Tuesday with a 3-2 win over Cedar Shoals.

Apalachee won two singles matches, getting wins from Zack Batt at No. 2 and Clayton Edenfield at No. 3. Matt Garrett and Brandon Tovar rounded out the scoring with a win at No. 1 doubles.

Pace 3, Wesleyan 2

NORCROSS -- Wesleyan took both doubles matches against Pace on Tuesday night but couldn't muster a singles win as the Wolves (0-2) fell to Pace 3-2.

Doubles winners were Jeffrey Chang and Brooks Prettyman at No. 1 and Zach Taylor and Andrew Dorman at No. 2.

Providence 5, Berkmar 0

LILBURN -- Providence swept Berkmar 5-0 on Tuesday night, getting singles wins from Jon North, Emory Williams and Clayton Cheek.

Taylor McGlothlen and Michael Turner added a No. 1 doubles win for the Stars (2-1), while Kyle Nunn and Robby Barker won at No. 2 doubles.

Hebron 3, Fellowship 2

DACULA -- Hebron won its opening boys tennis match of the season on Tuesday afternoon, topping Fellowship Christian 3-2.

Hebron (1-0) took all three singles matches with wins by Jerod Beck, Josh Beck and James Everson.

GIRLS TENNIS

Parkview 5, Archer 0

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Abby Nelms, Taylor Ballard and Megan Reeves all won in singles play Tuesday night as Parkview swept Archer 5-0.

Doubles winners were Daron Blankenship and Kristen Miles at No. 1 and McCall Mullee and Lauren Franklin at No. 2. Parkview improved to 1-2.

Mill Creek 3, Chattahoochee 2

HOSCHTON -- Mill Creek picked up a win at No. 1 doubles from Cailey Stevens and Allison Weaver to secure a 3-2 win over Chattahoochee on Tuesday night.

Mill Creek (4-1) also notched wins at No. 1 singles from Madison Hahn and No. 3 singles by Abbi Jordan.

Collins Hill 5, Grayson 0

LOGANVILLE -- Collins Hill evened its season record at 2-2 on Tuesday by beating Grayson 5-0.

Abbie Wehr, Ashley Jonston and Lexi Owensby all won in singles play for the Eagles. Both doubles teams also won for Collins Hill in Cassie Owensby and Maddie Owensby at No. 1 and Lindsay Doktor and Chelsea Sizemore at No. 2.

Mountain View 4, Central 1

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Mountain View improved to 2-0 on the season with a 4-1 win over Central Gwinnett on Tuesday night. Mountain View picked two singles wins from Courtney Conley at No. 1 and Victoria Mock at No. 2, while taking both doubles matches with wins from the No. 1 team of Meg Mullins and Allison Phan and the No. 2 pair of Bri Norris and Emily Coper.

Northview 3, North 2

JOHNS CREEK -- North Gwinnett dropped its opening match of the season with a narrow 3-2 loss to Northview.

Isabel Balsavage won at No. 3 singles for the Bulldogs (0-1), while Lizzy Bradley and Arianna Callan won at No. 2 doubles.

Fellowship 4, Hebron 1

DACULA -- Fellowship Christian defeated Hebron 4-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Dacula Park.

Hebron (0-2) picked up its point from a win at No. 2 doubles by Emily Cochran and McKenzie Lewis.

Providence 3, Berkmar 2

LILBURN -- Providence improved to 2-1 on the season with a 3-2 win over Berkmar on Tuesday night.

Providence took both doubles matches, getting wins at No. 1 from Katherine Harris and Carly Dubay and No. 2 by Morgan Pitts and Anna Sylvester. Abby Mazza also added a point by winning the No. 3 singles match.

Wesleyan 4, Pace 0

ATLANTA -- Megan Kelly of Wesleyan won at No. 1 singles and Savannah Strickland won at No. 2 on Tuesday night as part of the Wolves' 4-0 shutout of Pace.

Julie Rodriguez and Kaitlin English teamed up for a win at No. 1 doubles, while the pair of Dee Dee Seaman and Katie Van Laeke won at No. 2 doubles.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Mill Creek 17, Parkview 1

LILBURN -- Mill Creek got its 2012 season off to a strong start with a 17-1 win over Parkview on Tuesday night.

Noelle Allen led the Hawks (1-0) with five goals, while Alexis Ordini added three goals and two assists. Also helping in the win were Mackenzie Fagioli with two goals and an assist, Tori Windom with one goal and three assists and Rachael Gann with three goals. Keeper Chandler Griffin finished with five saves.

BOYS GOLF

Shiloh defeats Berkmar

SNELLVILLE -- Shiloh had two golfers under 50 on Tuesday as the Generals defeated Berkmar 204 to 263 at the Country Club of Gwinnett.

Tommy Blackwell led Shiloh with 45, while Matthew Cyran followed with 48.

Mountain View gets by Hebron

DACULA -- Mountain View defeated Hebron on Tuesday afternoon, slipping by the Lions 191 to 198 at the Tophy Club of Apalachee. The loss put Mountain View's record at 0-2.

GIRLS GOLF

Mill Creek defeats Peachtree Ridge

DULUTH -- Mill Creek's Ari Roberts shot a 34 on Tuesday afternoon in leading the Hawks to a 73 to 96 win over Peachtree Ridge at Sugarloaf.

Jenny Li was low medalist for the Lions with 44.

Couch leads Hebron over Mountain View

DACULA -- Kline Couch of Hebron shot 44 on Tuesday, leading the Lions to an 89 to 102 win over Mountain View at the Trophy Club of Apalachee.

Shiloh's Cierra Hoyell shoots 39

SNELLVILLE -- Cierra Hoyell of Shiloh carded a 39 on Tuesday in the Generals' win over Berkmar at the Country Club of Gwinnett.

BOYS LACROSSE

Duluth 5, Brookwood 2

SNELLVILLE -- Duluth ran its record to 2-0 on Tuesday night with a 5-2 win over Brookwood.

Was Ramon led the offense for Duluth with two goals, while Ben Loyal, Zack Consie and Michael Maas each added one goal. Sky Tabor also had a strong game at keeper with 12 saves.

GIRLS TRACK

Winder-Barrow wins three-way meet

DACULA -- Winder-Barrow tallied 54 points Tuesday night, taking first place against Dacula and Meadowcreek. Dacula finished second at 37 points with Meadowcreek close behind at 34.

Dacula's Anna Machovec won two field events, taking the shot put and the discus. Amanda Cope of Winder-Barrow was first in the 1,600m at 6 minutes even, while Meadowcreek's Brittany Poole won the 200m at 22.41 seconds.

BOYS TRACK

Dacula tops Winder-Barrow and Meadowcreek

DACULA -- Dacula finished with 58 points on Tuesday night to take first place, beating out Winder-Barrow (51 points) and Meadowcreek (42 points).

Durram Alarms led Dacula with wins in both the shotput and discus, while Josiah Bennett of Winder-Barrow won the 800m at 2 minutes, 17 seconds.
