"Woody Allen: A Documentary" (NR)

With the possible exception of Martin Scorsese, there is no living filmmaker who would make a more ideal documentary subject than Woody Allen. First broadcast on PBS late last year, this two-part, 195 minute film still feels incomplete. Making a movie about Allen is kind of like putting together a comprehensive best-of Beatles album; you're going to have to omit something. That comes mostly in the second half when director Robert Weide glosses over most of Allen's largely forgettable '90s titles. This minor slighting is more than made up for on the first disc with a thorough chronicling of Allen's younger years as a TV writer and stand-up comic.
