Gwinnett Sheriff's Office filled void during service delivery dispute

LAWRENCEVILLE -- In the 11-month void since municipal and county police were unable to renew licenses, the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office issued 15,400 citations related to speed detection and highway safety.

During the service delivery dispute between Gwinnett County and the 15 cities in the county, Sheriff Butch Conway established the Sheriff's Office Traffic Unit, which consisted of eight deputies who partnered, when possible, with the cities and the county to continue speed detection.

As each city regains its permit, the Sheriff's Office deputies will stop using radar in their jurisdictions.

"I wanted to make sure speed enforcement remained a priority in Gwinnett County in order to maintain highway safety and save lives," Conway said in a news release. "I'm very proud of the job done by our deputies during this crisis."There have been more than 20 DUI arrests and 19 traffic accidents worked during the period.

"I wanted to make sure speed enforcement remained a priority in Gwinnett County in order to maintain highway safety and save lives," Conway said in a news release.

"The fact that decreased enforcement hasn’t led to a corresponding increase in accidents makes the point that enforcement isn’t really about public safety," said John Bowman, spokesman for the National Motorists Association.

As we all know it is about money lost during the time that radar was not in use.We all know that if they really wanted to stop speeding that it can be done. The just want to control it enough to supplement the income of the city or county. Does speed control relate to fewer accidents, who knows. But is does give the county and cities more money and that boys and girls is the bottom line. Your wallet!!!!!
