PREP ROUNDUP: Wesleyan girls advance in Region 5-A tournament

ATLANTA -- Wesleyan opened its Region 5-A girls basketball tournament on Tuesday night with a solid 54-14 win over Galloway at Holy Innocents'.

Katie Frerking and Kaelyn Causwell each scored 10 points to lead Wesleyan (23-3) in scoring, helping the Wolves run their winning streak to eight in a row. Wesleyan will play at home on Friday night against Holy Innocents' in the second round.


White Co. 53, Lanier 34

GAINESVILLE -- White County topped Lanier 53-34 on Tuesday night in the opening round of the Region 8-AAA tournament at West Hall. Lanier finished its season 10-16 after going 1-26 the previous year.

Shelby Threlkeld, who was named to the all-region team by averaging 15.2 points per game, led the Longhorns on Tuesday night with 15 points. Amber Cesair was also an honorable mention for the all-region team.


Collins Hill 9, Wheeler 0

MARIETTA -- Collins Hill got its 2012 season off to a strong start on Tuesday by erupting for a 9-0 win over Wheeler.

Paige Hoover, Lauren Mitchell and Jessica Dacey each scored two goals to lead Collins Hill (1-0). Other contributors were Taylor Donahue (goal, two assists), Mariah Dickey (goal, three assists) and Regan Wilhite (goal).

Margaret Bruemmer, Desiree Bowen and Nicole Etinger each logged one assist, while Kamilah Talbi recorded the shutout at keeper.

Brookwood 3, Norcross 1

SNELLVILLE -- Brookwood's Kim Fincher scored two goals Tuesday night as the Broncos (1-0) topped Norcross 3-1 to open their season.

Cassidy Barker assisted one of Fincher's goals, while Sophie Pledger assisted another goal by Fiorella Gianarra. Jordan Shapiro scored for Norcross.

Harrison 2, Peachtree Ridge 1

KENNESAW -- Harrison spoiled Peachtree Ridge's season opener by nipping the Lions 2-1 on Tuesday night.

Peachtree Ridge (0-1) tied the score at 1-1 in the second half on a goal by Phoebe Palmer, but the Hoyas took the match by outscoring the Lions 2-1 on penalty kicks.

Mill Creek 1, West Forsyth 0

HOSCHTON -- Mill Creek opened its season with a 1-0 shutout over West Forsyth on Tuesday night.

Alex Giles scored the lone goal off an assist from Megan Gil, while keeper Rachel Allred preserved the shutout with three saves.

Heritage 1, Grayson 0

LOGANVILLE -- Grayson fell to Heritage 1-0 on Tuesday night in its opening match of the season.

The contest was decided by penalty kicks, with Heritage taking the match by edging Grayson (0-1) in 6-5 in the shootout.

Johns Creek 4, Duluth 1

JOHNS CREEK -- Duluth dropped its opening match of the season on Tuesday night with a 4-1 decision to Johns Creek.

Sarah Miller provided the lone goal for Duluth (0-1).

Buford 5, Winder-Barrow 0

WINDER -- Ceely Coker scored two goals Tuesday night in leading Buford to a 5-0 win over Winder-Barrow in the Wolves' season opener.

Tara Dambach, Lindsey White and Caitlyn Dawkins all helped with one goal each for Buford (1-0).

Providence 2, Berkmar 0

LILBURN -- Providence picked up two goals from Anna Bougas on Tuesday night as the Stars (1-0) opened their season with a 2-0 win over Berkmar.

Assisting Bougas' two goals were Brooke Kelly and Kat Slayton.


Mill Creek 6, West Forsyth 3

HOSCHTON -- Nick Muntean led Mill Creek with three goals and an assist on Tuesday as the Hawks started their season with a 6-3 win over West Forsyth.

Tony Baza added a goal with two assists for the Hawks (1-0), while Brandon O'Toole and Tyle Moody each had a goal and an assist. Tajay Hoppines also added an assist for Mill Creek.

Brookwood 2, Norcross 0

SNELLVILLE -- Brookwood kicked off its season by shutting out Norcross 2-0 on Tuesday night.

Brookwood's goals came from Adrian Alabi and Trevor Mooney.

Grayson 3, Heritage 1

LOGANVILLE -- Grayson received one goal each from Alvaro Pava, Adam Kremo and Luke Siegman on Tuesday night as the Rams topped Heritage 3-1.

The win moved Grayson's record to 1-0.

Berkmar 1, Providence 0

LILBURN -- Berkmar won its season opener with a hard-fought 1-0 win Providence on Tuesday night, getting its lone goal 12 minutes into the second half.

Providence (0-1) received a strong game from keeper Evan Flowers with 12 saves.

Johns Creek 2, Duluth 0

JOHNS CREEK -- Duluth gave up one goal in each half on Tuesday night as the Wildcats fell 2-0 to Johns Creek in both teams' season opener.

Buford 4, Winder-Barrow 1

WINDER -- Christian Lopez scored two goals and Matt Bonadies provided two assists on Tuesday in leading Buford to a 4-1 win over Winder-Barrow.

Buford (1-0) also received one goal each from Adante Aguilar and Carlos Gutierrez, while Esgardo Arroyo helped with two assists.
