South Gwinnett's ninth-grade basketball teams swept the Region 8-AAAAA Tournament titles, marking the first time in school history that both teams won region the same year.
The South girls defeated Archer 37-35 in overtime behind Allye Sneed's 15 points. Shangaria Chatman scored 10 points and Malaisia Stallworth added nine points as the Comets finished the season with a 14-4 record.
Other members of the winning girls team, coached by Matt Huffman, are Taylor Harris, Mikaiya Booth, Tiara Bradley, Troi Benbow, Destinee Turner, Kennedy Jenkins, Simone Bradley and Shayniah Brown.
The South boys beat Central 39-38 as Dallas Jackson (13 points) and Kentarrius White (nine points) led the offense. Duncan Whitehead hit the game-winning layup as he was fouled with 0.3 seconds left.
The Comets (15-3) are coached by Ryan Tarantino and Robert Frazier. Other members of the first-place team are Jaylen Turner, Gabe Tillman, Will Mattai, Jairus Bass, Jacquorrius Bryant, Mark Welch, Josh Miller, Dontae Gordon, Noel Hussey and Andrew Buckmire.
