Rain, not snow, expected Tuesday

LAWRENCEVILLE - Salt and snow shovels won't be needed Tuesday, but an umbrella could come in handy.

Gwinnett County is expected to miss the more severe winter weather, which is forecasted for north Georgia, as the National Weather Service has called for temperatures in the high 30s and low 40s. The ice and snow mix will not fall below Dawson County, said Vaughn Smith, a meteorologist at the Peachtree City office of the NWS.

"Basically, we're just expecting rain," Smith said of Gwinnett. "It will be pretty warm. The colder temperatures are well north."

Smith said rainfall amounts would be one-fourth to one-half of an inch on Tuesday.

"It's going to rain, there may be a little sleet, or snow mix, but certainly not a major storm," said Jon Richards, a Lawrenceville resident who runs www.lawrencevilleweather.com.

Richards said the area has experienced a bit of extremes in the last few days. While Monday's high was in the 50s, the low on Sunday was 19, which was the coldest since 16 degrees on Jan. 14, 2011. The warmer winter, Richards said, could be attributed to the La Nina Effect, which is dryer and warmer weather than normal.

Kai Alabi of Lawrenceville said it's nice to have four defined seasons of weather, but above average temperatures are enjoyable, too.

"I appreciate it being warmer, and I appreciate not having the hassle of shoveling snow," Alabi said. "It's cool temps, and not a lot of slush."

Francisco Nunez, also of Lawrenceville, added that he'd rather have temperatures in the 60s and 70, but he realizes that winter is here.

A winter weather advisory from midnight to noon on Tuesday is for the following counties: Dade, Walker, Catoosa, Whitfield, Murray, Fannin, Gilmer, Union, Towns, Chattooga, Pickens, Dawson, Lumpkin and White.

The NWS forecast for Lawrenceville for the rest of the week is highs in the mid-60s on Wednesday and Thursday, and 61 on Friday. Lows will be in the 40s. Wednesday and Friday are expected to be mostly sunny, while there is a 50 percent chance of rain on Thursday.
