ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- Police say an Athens man has been jailed after he assaulted his girlfriend, stole a car and led police on a chase that reached speeds of 100 mph.
Athens-Clarke County police say the suspect kept trying to escape even after officers used stop sticks to flatten three of his tires. He drove another mile before police boxed him in.
Reports say that George Lee Cooper II fled after an officer answering a domestic disturbance call Friday saw him stomping on his girlfriend in the street. Police say he stole another woman's car and tried to get away.
Cooper is jailed without bond on charges including aggravated assault, simple battery and car theft. It was not immediately known if he had attorney.
