ATLANTA (AP) -- Utility regulators in Georgia will decide whether to approve spending on what could be the first nuclear plant built from scratch in a generation.
Members of the state Public Service Commission are scheduled to vote Friday on whether to approve the Southern Co.'s latest spending on Plant Vogtle.
On Thursday, the project won approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission in a long-awaited vote.
State regulators are tasked with monitoring Southern Co.'s spending as it builds the $14 billion project. Under state law, utility customers ultimately pay for the cost of building the two new reactors near Augusta.
A state watchdog said in December that the utility faces "significant challenges" building the reactors without exceeding its share of the $6 billion budget. Utility officials say the project remains on budget.
