Suwanee woman jailed for reportedly leaving baby in locked car while shopping

BUFORD -- A Suwanee woman was jailed this week on charges she left her 15-month-old daughter alone in a locked car while she shopped for an hour, police said.

Gwinnett police arrested Yibei Xu, 32, on misdemeanor charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor Wednesday afternoon.

Another shopper at a Ross department store near the Mall of Georgia called 911 about 4 p.m. to report the infant was alone and crying, strapped into a carseat in the back of a Toyota Prius in the parking lot.

A Gwinnett officer who arrived to find the vehicle's doors locked and the baby crying called for firefighters to open the vehicle and check the child's condition. Emergency responders found no medical issues, according to a Gwinnett police report.

Inside the store, a page went out for the registered owner of the Prius to report to the parking lot. About 15 minutes later, Xu returned to the vehicle. She'd been away from the car for about 55 minutes, the report states.

Xu told police she "did not want to take the baby inside because she was sleeping," an officer wrote.

Xu's husband came to the scene to take custody of the child, while she was handcuffed and transported to the Gwinnett County Jail. She posted $1,300 bond Thursday.
