SUWANEE -- Two passengers were taken to the hospital after a two-car accident that gummed up traffic on Interstate 85 northbound during Thursday afternoon's rush hour, officials said.
The accident occurred at about 5 p.m., a passenger car colliding with a pickup truck before skidding off the highway and hitting some trees near I-85's split with I-985, Gwinnett County police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith said.
Both passengers of the car were trapped inside the vehicle and taken to the hospital after being extricated -- one by helicopter to an Atlanta-area hospital, the other via ambulance to a local hospital, Smith said.
No further information regarding their identities or medical status was immediately available.
Major traffic jams blocked all but one lane on the interstate. Severe traffic was reported on nearby Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road.
