Augusta minor league team plans move to nearby SC

AUGUSTA — Augusta's minor league baseball team is planning a move to a new stadium to be built in North Augusta — a city located just across the Savannah River in neighboring South Carolina.

The team, affiliated with San Francisco Giants, and the South Carolina city have been working since March on plans to build a stadium with hotel and conference center as well as retail and residential space. The project calls for $43 million in taxpayer funding and $122 million in private investment.

City officials in Augusta, Ga., tried to devise a similar plan for a new stadium, using the property of the former Georgia Golf Hall of Fame, last year but fell short.

Planners hope the new GreenJackets' stadium will open for the 2015 season.
