Large Gwinnett contingent earns trip to Junior Bowl

At least two members of Norcross’ recently crowned Class AAAAAA state championship team were supposed to ring out 2012 on a huge high note by participating in the 2012 AT&T Georgia Junior Bowl on Monday.

However, defensive end Lorenzo Carter declined his initial invitation to rejoin the Blue Devils basketball team, while receiver Myles Autry was forced to back out of the game to take care of the knee injury he suffered in the state semifinals and played through in the title game.

But while those two will not among the nearly 100 of the state’s top juniors to take part in the game, which will feature more than 100 of the state’s top juniors and be seen by several college coaches and a national television audience on ESPN3, three more Norcross players will, along with seven other players from Gwinnett high schools.

Norcross’ Trent Jenkins, Kevin Mouhon and JaQuan Simpkins will join North Gwinnett’s Nate Brown and Dante Sawyer, South Gwinnett’s Dennis Edwards and Coray Kell, Brookwood’s Josh Brown, Parkview’s Bryce Lewis and Collins Hill’s Christian Harris in playing for the East all-stars as they take on the West all-stars, with kickoff set for 1 p.m. Monday at Grady Stadium in Atlanta.

In addition, the East squad will feature two coaches with Gwinnett ties. Head coach Ed Dudley, currently the head coach at Class AAAAA runner-up Ware County, began his head coaching career at Buford in 1992, while assistant Philip Jones, now the head coach at Banks County, is a 1997 graduate of Brookwood.
