DeShields stars as Norcross girls beat Oregon champs

LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. — Diamond DeShields scored 23 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Norcross girls to a 45-42 victory over defending Oregon Class AAAAA state champion Springfield in the Nike Interstate Shootout late Thursday night.

The game featured a battle of two of the best high school seniors in the country and DeShields, headed to North Carolina, won it over 6-foot-6 Mercedes Russell, a Tennessee recruit. Russell had 15 points.

Springfield came into the game ranked No. 17 nationally by USA Today, while Norcross was No. 20.

Norcross (9-1) rallied from a 24-13 second-quarter deficit as DeShields scored 13 of her points in the second half. Russell had just four after intermission. Shayla Cooper, who signed with Georgetown, scored 15 for the Blue Devils and made 5 of 6 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Springfield (5-2) had a potential game-tying 3-pointer rim out at the buzzer.
