She grew up in the community of Elwood, Mississippi and particularly loved reading. She enjoyed telling stories of her youth, such as when a peddler came by with books for sale. The family had no money to spare, but she joyfully received a book of Bible stories and the peddler left with a chicken tucked under his arm. She moved to Washington D.C. to work on the 1940 Census, then worked at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing where she met her husband. They were married in 1943 and he received his WWII draft notice the following day. After his tour of duty as a bomb disposal expert, they lived in Statesville, NC, Charleston, SC, and the Atlanta area where she was known for her excellent skills as a seamstress of clothing and upholstery. She owned businesses in Charleston, SC, and Lilburn, GA, known as Granny’s Collectibles, where she sold glassware and furniture. She was particularly known for her wit and smile. She started the day singing while cooking breakfast for the family. Upon her retirement she enjoyed spending her time planting trees and flowers. The family will hold a private service at a later date. Arrangements made by Tim Stewart Funeral Home, 2246 Wisteria Drive, Snellville, GA 30078. 770-979-5010.
