LAWRENCEVILLE -- The second suspect in the October murder of a 22-year-old Lawrenceville man was detained over the weekend.
Gwinnett County Detention Center records show Evans Jerrell Barnes, 20, was booked into the jail at about 10 p.m. Sunday. He has been charged with murder and criminal attempt to commit a crime alongside Robert Earl Carpenter, who was arrested last week.
The duo is charged in the death of 22-year-old Rashad Jones, who was fatally shot outside a Lawrenceville subdivision on Oct. 16. Police had originally described the shooting, which is believed to have started as a planned robbery, as self defense after interviewing witnesses and reportedly finding an unloaded gun on Jones' body.
On Nov. 26, though, authorities issued warrants charging Barnes and Carpenter. Incident reports cited only "additional investigation" as the rationale behind filing charges.
It was unclear Monday where Barnes, a resident of North Charleston, S.C., was originally detained. Gwinnett County police deferred comment to the Sheriff's Department. A spokesman there could not be reached for comment.
Both suspects are being held without bond.
