NORCROSS -- Justin Lewis scored 16 points, taking advantage of Morgan County's defense keying on others as Greater Atlanta Christian defeated Morgan County 60-51 in the GAC Showcase on Saturday.
The Spartans (7-0) saw the Bulldogs key on Delano Spencer and Isaiah Wilkins, giving Lewis the opportunity to shine with open shots.
"They were giving him the shot and he knocked down those mid-range jumpers," GAC head coach Eddie Martin said. "Sometimes your best players aren't shooting as well and you need certain guys to step up. That's what he did."
GAC held down the fort early against Morgan County as the Bulldogs didn't score their first point until there were 51 seconds to go in the first quarter.
However, when the Bulldogs did score, they got five quick points to go into the second only down 9-5.
The second quarter was a track meet as the teams traded baskets on four straight trips down the floor. By halftime, the Spartans had a 29-23 lead.
Things changed early in the third as GAC came out on a 7-0 run to take a 36-23 lead, including a 3-pointer from Spencer.
However, Morgan County (4-2) fought back, scoring 14 of the next 22 points to make it 44-37 heading into the fourth.
"I always feel like the first four minutes of the third quarter are going to dictate the flow of the rest of the game," Martin said. "We had them on their heels and we let them get back in the game."
The Bulldogs got to within five points early in the fourth, but strong defense from the Spartans helped stretch the lead back out.
Spencer's steal and assist to Lewis for a layup expanded the lead to 50-39 and the Spartans never looked back.
"That was a good team we beat," Martin said. "They're going to make a lot of noise this year and nobody should sleep on them."
Spencer finished the game with 16 points, while Wilkins had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Morgan County was led by Tookie Brown with 11 points, while C.J. Thurman had eight points and 10 rebounds.
Berkmar 52, Whitefield Academy 31
Berkmar started and ended well on defense, holding Whitefield Academy to a total of six points in the first and fourth quarters.
The Patriots (5-3) led 20-14 at halftime and stretched their lead to 37-27 after three quarters.
Tim Rowe led the Patriots with 13 points, while Bradley Holmes had 12.
North Cobb 64, Buford 61
North Cobb and Buford went back-and-forth for four quarters with the Wolves holding a three-point lead late.
North Cobb hit a 3-pointer to tie the game with 40 seconds left, giving the Wolves a chance to hold for the last shot.
However, a block by North Cobb's Jordan Neff gave the ball back to the Warriors as Dennis Young-Coleman knocked down a 3-pointer with six seconds left to lift North Cobb to the win as Austin Pickett missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
The Warriors (7-1) were led by Lee Moore with 21 points, while Saxton Steele added 19.
Buford (2-4) was led by A.J. Davis and Kyle Doyle with 14 points apiece.
