COUNTY WRESTLING NOTES: Carlyle putting mark on Buford program
LAWRENCEVILLE -- Archer's wrestling team had its second straight Gwinnett County crown locked up going into Saturday's finals.
The championship round was just an added bonus for the Tigers.
The hosts put 13 wrestlers in the finals and came away with seven county champs to win the crown.
"It feels great. But what feels even better is all of my teammates were in the final, too," Archer wrestler Ernest Alexander said. "It shows our hard work is paying off. We want to be the team no one wants to wrestle."
Archer had a 142-point lead going into the finals. The Tigers, who are in their fourth year of existence, scored 328 points to win the county title again. Archer scored 219.5 points last year with three county champs.
"We wrestled pretty well," Archer coach Tom Beuglas said. "Thirteen in the finals is pretty good. We lost a couple of close ones that could have gone the other way."
North Gwinnett was second with 186 points, Brookwood was third with 122 and Meadowcreek was fourth with 109.
"Archer has an unbelievable team," North Gwinnett coach Phil Daniel said. "We've come a long way. The kids are fighting their tails off."
Meadowcreek brought 10 wrestlers to the tourney and its fourth-place finish was the highest for the Mustangs since they took second in 1994.
The county title was the seventh tournament won by Archer this year, which also hold victories at the Southern Slam (S.C.) and the Osceola Duals (Fla.).
"I knew we would be good, but I didn't know we would be this good," Alexander said.
"We still have a lot of work to do, though."
Archer will wrestle at McCallie, Tenn., and a tournament in Illinois the next two weeks.
"We'll see how good we are when we go up there," Beuglas said.
Archer looked pretty stout on Saturday by putting 13 wrestlers in the finals.
The Tigers got county champions from Vincent Artigues (106 pounds), Sam Bullard (120), Chris Diaz (132), Daniel Bullard (138), Zach Wright (152), Elliot Lee (182) and Ernest Alexander (195).
"We're scoring points in every weight class," Beuglas said. "Our depth is carrying us now."
The seven champions are one shy of the record held by the 2006 and 2007 Parkview teams that had eight and were coached by Beuglas.
"We've got something to shoot for," Beuglas said with a smile.
Freshman Diaz got a 3-0 victory over Brookwood's Wyatt Jozwowski, a state runner-up a year ago.
Daniel and Sam Bullard joined a small group of brothers to win county in the same year. It's the seventh time that's happened and the first since 2009 when Peachtree Ridge's Michael and James Chapman won it in the same year.
The Bullards could have been the first family to have three siblings win county in the same year, but Thomas Bullard lost a 6-5 battle in triple overtime with one second left.
"The Bullard one was a pretty wild one," Beuglas said.
North Gwinnett had a trio of county champions in Avery Elford (170), Jalen Brooks (220) and Alex Stoehr (285).
Buford's Jack Barber (113) and Brayden Hartley (126) were champs, along with Central Gwinnett's Leivon Lewis (145) and Parkview's Khalil Shakur (160).
