Tripp to have shunt inserted

Tripp Halstead, a Winder toddler recovering from a head injury when a tree branch hit him while at a day care center, will have a shunt inserted to help with swelling in his brain.

Three days after Tripp Halstead had three procedures to help his recovery, his mother said on Thursday that he would likely need a shunt inserted into his head.

After a neurosurgeron read a CT scan, Halstead's mother Stacy said the shunt is needed because swelling in her son's brain is not going down on its own. Doctors would also insert a permanent tube from Halstead's brain to his stomach.

The suggestion was one doctor's opinion, and he planned to meet with others to discuss potential next steps.

"I don't think this is a major surgery," Halstead's mother, Stacy, said. "But considering everything he has gone through, for him to have another surgery makes it a big deal."

If this plan goes through, the tentative schedule is to have the procedure on Friday, and move back to rehab early next week, Stacy said.

As Halstead continues to recover, a Winder fundraiser is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Infinity Center behind Wendy's. Parents Bill and Stacy are expected to be on hand to thank supporters, who have helped offset their son's medical costs.

The event will have raffles, food and free massages. Among some of the items at the event are a 43-inch television, a Bladerunner Archery Compound Bow, Duck Commander Wake Maker Decoy System, 31 Gifts, gift certificates and baked goods.

On Friday, Georgia Spa Company stores in Athens, Buford and Kennesaw will hold a raffle for a hot tub or Big Green Egg grill. Tickets are $10 and available at each store and the Community Bank and Trust in Winder, or at teamboom4tripp.com. The company is donating 100 percent of the proceeds to the family.

The grand prize is a new Hot Spring Spas Flair or $5,000 cash. Second place is a large Big Green Egg, and third place is a two-hour Lincoln Towncar rental courtesy of Admiral Transportation.
