Police lieutenant shot in the head in Griffin

GRIFFIN, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia police lieutenant is hospitalized after being shot in the head with a semi-automatic weapon in Griffin, authorities said.

The veteran officer was coming to the aid of a fellow officer when he was hit by the gunfire Wednesday night, Griffin police Capt. Dwayne Jones said.

Officers were responding to a report of man wearing all black and waving a gun around in the front yard of his residence on Circus Street, police said.

Police said the ordeal began around 10:15 p.m., when an officer arrived and the suspect began running. The suspect fired shots at that officer, who returned fire, Jones said.

That officer wasn't hurt, and lost sight of the suspect.

The police lieutenant, who had just arrived to help the officer, was still in his patrol car when the police say the man fired a shot through the windshield of his patrol car.

The injured lieutenant was conscious while being flown to Grady Memorial Hospital, but his condition was not immediately known. The suspect was flown to Atlanta Medical Center, and his condition wasn't immediately known.

Griffin is about 40 miles south of Atlanta.
