North Gwinnett quarterback Michael Haynes won online voting this week as the Daily Post's Fans Choice Player of the Year.
The senior was one of 15 Gwinnett high school football players up for the honor. Each of those players won fan voting this season as a Fans Choice Player of the Week.
Haynes got 38 percent of the vote to win a tight competition with Wesleyan's Rhett Delk (33 percent). Mill Creek's Michael Haynes (6 percent) edged Brookwood's Brandon Morrow (4 percent) and Josh Brown (4 percent) and Mountain View's Marvin Elam (4 percent) for third place.
Nearly 5,000 votes were cast this week and Haynes finished with 1,856 votes to Delk's 1,607.
Haynes won his Fans Choice Player of the Week honor for his play vs. Duluth on Oct. 5, when he rushed for 145 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 91 yards and another score.
He finished the season as one of Gwinnett's top dual-threat quarterbacks, throwing for 2,193 yards and 26 TDs with a 66.6 completion percentage. He also was North's leading rusher with 622 yards and three more TDs.
North advanced to the Class AAAAAA state quarterfinals before losing at Lovejoy. Haynes was hobbled by a broken leg in the final five games, but still played well during the Bulldogs' run.
"I just know the kid's a gutsy performer," North head coach Bob Sphire said of Haynes. "He's a team-first guy. He wanted to be out there on the field helping his team any way he could."
