LAWRENCEVILLE -- A local nurse who specializes in helping veterans was recently named a Hospital Hero.

The award was given by the Georgia Hospital Association to 10 people around the state. Gayle Hayes, a registered nurse at the Gwinnett Medical Center, also helps staff the "IMPACT program," which is designed to reduce the incidence of complications.

When Hayes realized many of the patients being referred to the Impact program were veterans and needed help emotionally and financially, she printed personalized certificates of appreciation. According to a news release, many of the veterans broke down in tears after they received a certificate.

Hayes also made special bags, at her own expense, which had toiletries and snacks for the veterans.

For a colleague whose husband was diagnosed with a debilitating form of cancer, Hayes planned and organized a trip to Disney World.

Hayes also volunteers as a qualified CPR instructor to keep GMC's requirements up to date.

"Gayle Hayes is a selfless, inspiring individual who embodies every qualification of a hospital hero," said Joe Parker, president of GHA. "She goes out of her way on a daily basis to give hospital patients, staff, and the entire community the care and compassion they need. She is a deserving recipient of this award."
