Ask Drew Meyer what he wants for Christmas, and professionally it's a no-brainer. As senior director of ReStore Support, he wants to bring more awareness to the Gwinnett ReStore, which sells new or slightly used furniture, appliances and home furnishings and uses the funds raised to support Habitat for Humanity.

"People know what Habitat does, but (a lot) don't know about ReStore and don't know the relationship between ReStore and Habitat," Meyer said. "My main thing is letting people know we are here and that they can donate, shop and volunteer at our store."

The Gwinnett ReStore is located in Lawrenceville near the Kroger at Ga. Highway 120 and Riverside Drive. It is one of more than 800 such stores in the U.S., which are all set up to fund Habitat for Humanity projects. Meyer said donations from individuals begin to slow down at this time of the year while corporate donations pick up as companies prepare for end-of-the-year inventory. He said the ReStore receives donations from retailers, wholesalers and dealers as well as individuals.

Those donations set up a circle of giving -- with the people making a donation getting a tax deduction if they so desire, customers getting a good price on the goods sold and Habitat for Humanity getting much-needed donations.

"It's a chance to make a donation without having to cut a check," Meyer said. "And the customer gets a bargain and the funds generated by the sale of these products go right back into building homes and hope in Gwinnett County. It's a win-win-win situation."

The ReStore is also looking for volunteers to help both in the warehouse and on the showroom floor. Meyer said the volunteering opportunity works well for a person who might want to support Habitat for Humanity but isn't comfortable actually working on a home.

Donations can be dropped off at the store or you an call the donation hot line at 770-962-4000 for pick up. For more information about donating or volunteering, go to www.gwinnettrestore.org.
