LAWRENCEVILLE -- High winds and rain on Monday afternoon caused a tree limb about a foot in diameter to fall on a moving Ford Ranger, which was being driven by a city of Lawrenceville employee, and caused a chain reaction collision with two other vehicles.

Lawrenceville Police Sgt. Christopher Ralston said the incident happened about 1:30 p.m. when the employee was driving south on Stone Mountain Street and approaching Constitution Boulevard. The tree limb landed on the roof of the truck, and incapacitated the driver, who suddenly didn't have control of the vehicle, Ralston said.

The Ranger then struck a Chevrolet S-10 south of Constitution Boulevard, which caused the S-10 to hit a Ford Expedition. The employee, whose name Ralston did not release, was critically injured in the incident and taken to Gwinnett Medical Center. The driver of the S-10 suffered non-life threatening injuries, and the driver of the Expedition was not injured and released at the scene, Ralston said.

The Ranger and S-10 were totaled, and the Expedition had minor damage, Ralston said.

The investigation is ongoing, Ralston said, and he did not have an estimate about how fast the Ranger was going when the incident began.
