Price for I-85 toll lanes soars to record high

ATLANTA (AP) — The cost to use interstate toll roads in parts of Gwinnett, which has been steadily rising in recent months, has hit a new record.

Motorists during Friday morning's rush hour paid a record $6.35 to use the lanes.

Rates for the so-called HOT lanes on Interstate 85 have increased in the past year, from $4.70 in February to $5 in April and now well over $6 some days.

Authorities with the Georgia State Road and Tollway Authority say prices rise and fall throughout the day, depending on traffic volumes.

LOL. All i can say is god love you if you want to pay more in taxes. We are one step closer to being Chicago and having nothing but toll roads because government can't live within a budget.

It's not really a tax if it's entirely voluntary - same as deciding to pay for a first class plane ticket.

It's a tax on those driving the regular lanes!

I dont know where you came from..My God those roads were paid for with tax money on fuel and other things for years. We have some of the highest fuel tax in the south....You need to wake up. We paid for the road we should be able to drive on it without having to pay again

Well let's see, it cost $33 million dollars to "build" the HOT Lane. Where do you think that money came from? And NO that was not voluntary! Every citizen advisory group held on the HOT Lanes was against it, but it was built anyway.

Peach passes have been oversold and soon the HOT lanes will slow down just like the other lanes. Those who wish to use the HOT lanes will soon realize that the cost is just not worth it. The ones who chose to use it are paying a double tax for this privilage. Now if you have money to 'throw away' then keep using the lanes. When you get the bill you may not want to use these lanes. It is based on supply and demand. Mean while the SRTA is sitting back laughing at all that use the lanes and keeping them in a job.

Cleanup is actually correct in as far as a tax. However, this does represent confiscation of a public asset. By the way, the legislation that enables this behavior was signed by Gwinnett's favorite president, George Bush.

Why pay for something once if you can pay for it 2 or 3 times...

Just pretend its a new seat in the future Falcon nest downtown where YOU pay to get into the line to PAY again for a SHOT at a seat...

It's your money, burn it anyway you want to.

Careful...we may be getting toll booths. But not to worry, they will be removed when no needs money, Right Sonny?

Well, somebody has to support that bloated SRTA and the salaries of those inept excuses for Government Employees like Malika Reed Wilkins, et al. Their mere existence is solely for redistributing the wealth of Gwinnett County into the hands of the moocher and looter classes of our society.

Seems like the goverment is running this like a business making as much money as possible.

There's just one difference. How many businesses do you know that can deduct money directly from their "customers" paychecks to pay for their capital acquisition and operating expenses?

There will be no money deducted unless you choose to ride in the hot lane.

Oh right ...

That why the lanes can't be taken out WITHOUT FEDERAL permission.

Don't be fooled, your tax dollars (that now come from China) are hard at work, sucking money out of your pocket at a rate that makes Mr. Oreck jealous.

Now to increase the drain on your wallet ride in the lanes!!

Because unless you're attorney, in business or a government official, you can't pass the fee on to someone else...

Fools with OUR money are soon parted..

It is ridiculous. A lane for those who can afford to drive in it. And, those who drive in it generally are doing like 85 and ride your tailpipe and flash their lights at you when your going 10 miles per hour over the speed limit. This activity generally makes me slow down to the actual speed limit just for spite. GCPD, GCSO and GSP should be nailing the folks in the HOT lanes who are using it as their private autobahn. I actually see GCPD sometimes near Jimmmy Carter along the HOT lane wall snagging them, just wish they would do it more often!

H/T to Hightop I like the way your mind works ...

Adding the option to "pay to play" if you choose isn't a bad concept in itself.

But when the carpool rules were changed, fees collected just to put a nontransferable pass on cars that rarely travel it, NO REFUND policy use it or lose it mindset, all to pay for hardware that WON'T be complete in 30 years or so...

Acting like a business? Which one GM?

Or is it a tribute to the corpsemen?
