Fort Yargo State Park to close

WINDER -- Fort Yargo State Park in Winder will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday for "managed deer hunts."

The quota hunts are a practice to manage the deer population.

They began in 2007 after wildlife biologists determined the park was "grossly overpopulated" with deer, Department of Natural Resources senior wildlife biologist Kevin Lowrey told the Athens Banner-Herald. Visitors will not be allowed in the park during the hunt.

Park rangers and DNR conservation officers will attend the hunt, and collect data about the harvested deer.
