Construction on new Sugar Hill City Hall to be finished by Christmas

SUGAR HILL -- At its monthly work session Monday night, the Sugar Hill City Council:

• Announced its $11 million, 33,000-square-foot City Hall at West Broad Street and Temple Drive downtown is expected to be complete by Dec. 21. City Manager Bob Hail said furniture is scheduled to be installed Jan. 2-3 and information technology Jan. 5-6, with city employees set to move from the existing City Hall at West Broad and Level Creek Jan. 7-8. Hail expects the building to be fully operational by Jan. 9, before its grand opening ceremony at 1 p.m. Jan. 13 and its first City Council meeting at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 14.

• The $6 million parking deck, amenity pond, amphitheater and half-mile streetscape along West Broad between Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Ga. Highway 20 is complete.

• Reviewed James Bailey's request to place a 12-by-24-foot storage building behind his residence at 6000 Eagle Close Lane at Links View Drive.

• Reviewed Richard Jenkins' request to annex and rezone his property at 1205 Buford Highway from neighborhood business district to general business, for use as a commercial office. Jenkins wants to lease the 1,500-square-foot building on the property to a plumbing contractor who would park works trucks there.

• Heard an update from Global Sports' United about its long-planned but slow-advancing athletics, sports medicine and retail development on 90 acres between the Sugar Hill Golf Club and Chattahoochee River north of Ga. Highway 20. Accessible by a one-third-mile-long road Sugar Hill is building from the highway, the development's planned first phase includes a 260,000-square-foot facility combining sports medicine offices and a recreation center.
