ATLANTA (AP) -- Southern Co. must soon disclose its most recent costs to build a new nuclear plant in Georgia amid questions over whether the project can stay on budget.
The Atlanta-based utility is building two more nuclear reactors at Plant Vogtle near Augusta. When complete, the estimated $14 billion project will be the first nuclear plant built from scratch in a generation.
Southern Co. must file a report by Friday with Georgia's Public Service Commission detailing its construction spending for the six-month period ending in June. Earlier this year, an independent monitor working for the commission said that he believed the utility would exceed its share of the construction budget, roughly $6.1 billion.
So far, the utility has not asked regulators for an increase its construction budget.
