New gallery owner bets on downtown Winder

WINDER -- Kristi Green has done her homework.

She's attended the Downtown Development Authority meetings and tabulated that 30,000 vehicles pass through the heart of Winder per day. She's determined to give drivers a good reason to stop, and to infuse commercial life into Barrow's county seat.

Last year, Green uprooted from Atlanta to open Krysalis Art Gallery in the historic Carrington House on Broad Street. She'd previously managed art galleries in Atlanta and Miami, and in Winder she saw fertile ground for a new gallery with modern, affordable offerings -- running the gamut from classically designed furniture to paintings and sculpture.

In moving to Winder, Green was seeking a "livable, vibrant small town atmosphere," she said.

Green hopes the gallery can put Winder on the map as a destination for art and design.

The gallery, opened in July, will feature local artists such as Kathleen and Craig Gill, Toby Reid, Harold Melton, Patricia Schmacher and Joyce Clamp. Art, she believes, is the idea of introducing beauty into a room. She wants her gallery space to be accessible to everyone from art aficionados to homeowners who want style by way of modest budgets.

"Design is truly affordable if you know where to look," she said.

In addition to the offerings available for sale, she plans to promote talented local artists' works with Friday and Saturday shows and exhibits.

"I'll serve wine," she said. "It'll be like a party."

The gallery will also offer drawing, painting and acting classes, with some studio space available for rent.

Green senses a rebirth in downtown Winder, which she's happy to bolster, she said.

"Even in this economy, people still want to go out and have a good time," she said. "Winder has great sidewalks, and I hope that galleries like mine will help contribute to this town becoming more of a walking community."

Krysalis Art Gallery is located at 171 N. Broad St., beside the Gwinnett Clinic. It's open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.
