HOSCHTON -- Mill Creek High School will host the Dr. Jim L. Markham Golf Classic on Nov. 6 at Chateau Elan to honor Markham, an educator of 45 years who is retiring as principal in December to battle cancer that recently came out of remission.

The tournament begins with a 7 a.m. breakfast and registration and a 9 a.m. shotgun start. The cost is $100 per player and sponsorships are available. An American Flag donation of $1 each also is an option to honor the military service of Markham, whose cancer is a direct result of Agent Orange exposure in Vietnam. He was first diagnosed with cancer 15 years ago.

Markham is the only principal in Mill Creek history. Prior to working at Mill Creek, he spent 10 years at Berkmar and nine at Parkview.

All proceeds from the tournament will benefit Relay for Life and cancer research. Registration is available through the Mill Creek High School Community School. For more information or questions, email Jerry_Arnold@comcast.net.

Loganville Christian Academy gets grant

LOGANVILLE -- Liberty Mutual's Responsible Sports program recently awarded Loganville Christian Academy a $2,500 grant, which will be used toward the construction of its new athletic training facility and press boxes at the baseball and softball fields.

Loganville Christian Academy was one of only 15 youth sports organizations across the country to earn the grant.

A local Liberty Mutual sales representative presented the check to the school on Friday at the athletic training center.

Loganville Christian Academy rallied the community to participate in an online course on mentoring and responsibility in youth sports for coaches and parents at www.responsiblesports.com. Each course completion earned a credit for Loganville Christian Academy, enabling it to have among the highest levels of participation based on population size to receive the grant.

"In communities across the country, schools and youth sports programs are constantly feeling the financial strains of budget limitations, and as a result, must find alternative resources to provide meaningful experiences for youth athletes," said Michelle Edwards, a sales representative in Liberty Mutual's Snellville office.

"Loganville Christian Academy has shown the commitment and dedication to the ideals promoted through youth sports, which is why today we award them much-needed funding that will help them continue to provide responsible sports environments for Loganville kids."
